Project 10: Seaside Brewery
The form of the territory
Places with cultural significance reflect the diversity of communities, talk about who the peoples in communities are, the past that made communities form, and the region’s landscape.
Killough appeared to be empty, derelict and rarely held social activities around. This design project aims to provide a building that would improve people’s life in Killough.
The decision is made to design a microbrewery on the site near Killough harbour.
During the site visit, there is beautiful stone wall with the seaside landscape. While the site itself is not heritage per se, there is the possibility that the surroundings are the heritage that people in Killough value.
SL thought constructing the new building after demolishing the stone wall would destroy the history and context of the site.
So, a seaside microbrewery is designed with a focus on the conservation of the existing stone wall.
For this design, SL is carrying out research in depth about the conserving approach for stone walls with some preservation framework.
Visit & Observation
SL visited the Lecale and went around Killough and Ardglass. Killough was a quiet and empty site, and people were rarely seen apart from those working in the restaurant. Later, SL revisited Lecale and focused on Killough. At first, SL considered improving the business sector in Ardglass. However, SL ultimately decided to revive the Killough since it appears to be more deserted, lone and lacking social activity. The observation is mainly made on the stone wall of the Killough site.

Atmosphere
The seaside brewery consists of a brewery facility, shop, pub and storage building. People will be able to see the landscape and seaside from the pub and mezzanine and enjoy the brewed beer and dish with the breeze from the sea.
