Sir John Soane is an architect in neo-classicism era and his architecture is focused on inventive usage of light, space, and experimentation that are gained from classic architectures. Usually, John Soane’s known architecture is about renovating the existing space into new one. In 1700s to 1800s, he bought three houses, demolished them, and rebuilt them into his own house and office. Then Soane had constructed the picture gallery on the former site of No. 14, and the gallery is linked to No. 13. At that moment, the houses were not connected to each other.
Later, the museum had been established by a Private Act of Parliament in 1833. When John Soane had passed away in 1837, the No. 13 needed to be maintained as soon as possible because No. 13 had been left abandoned since Soane’s death. And the house, along with Soane’s collections, needs to be preserved as much as possible exactly as they were left at Soane’s death.
